Scarlet #1 CustomerReview
Scarlet is a title released under Marvel’s imprint, Icon Comics. Written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Alex Maleev, the debut issue was made available July of 2010. Individual credentials for each of these men would require a detour from this review, so I’ll only note that they’ve collaborated often with exemplary success. If you’re not familiar with either man, Scarlet is a wonderful opportunity to become so.
The book opens to a full-framed first page broadcasting murder in a darkly washed alley. A red-headed woman in a white tank top and black vest is wincing while choking a man with wire. Turn the page and she’s riffling through the dead man’s clothing for a few frames before pulling from his pocket enough cash to pay her rent and his police badge.
Enter Scarlet, a woman victimized well beyond scorn.
She talks to herself and she talks to the reader. This is a unique and interesting angle on what is clearly a vigilante momentum; I liked it immediately. Walking along a Portland street, she explains why it is that she’s in her position with the sort of anger and melancholy needed to balance out a woman in this role. Following this introduction she explains the tragedies of her last year and you know now and understand why she is what she is. It is inviting. Very much so.
This publication is presented with a briskly executed narrative that would read well on its own. Add the art of Alex Maleev and you’re suddenly holding just the sort of effort needed to introduce a skeptic to the world of comic books. I would highly recommend this to anyone, especially those new to graphic literature. It’s definitely shaping up to be a win.
